Playground Flooring FAQs

A variety of factors should be considered when choosing the best surfacing solution for your indoor or outdoor playground. From fall height protection to slip resistance and durability, Perfect Surfaces rubber flooring playground products are guaranteed to provide the best protection for kids of all ages.

What is the Safest Playground Material?

Our PlaySafe SHOCK tiles are one of the safest and most effective playground surfacing materials on the market. PlaySafe SHOCK playground floor tiles are constructed from post-consumer recycled rubber. They’re thick and durable enough to withstand extreme impact, feature an inherent slip-resistant surface and can achieve a variety of fall height requirements with the addition of a playpad foam. Rubber playground tiles are durable, comfortable, and stay in place, so you won’t have to worry about gaps in coverage- a challenge frequently faced due to easily displaced wood mulch or gravel.

Does Moisture Accumulate on the Surface?

Not a chance! Whether you choose a rubber playground tile or an artificial playground turf, all of our products are water-permeable and ideal for playgrounds all year round! Our PlaySafe SHOCK rubber playground tiles feature maximum drainage beneath, thanks to the many channels for moisture to run through and out. But don’t let a rainy day stop you- PlaySafe SHOCK rubber outdoor playground flooring offers a non-slip surface, even when wet, making playtime an all-weather activity!

What Does Fall Height Mean? How is Fall Height Tested?

Fall height refers to the height between the floor of the play structure and the protective surface beneath. It estimates the height from which a child might make impact with the ground—such as the top of a slide to the ground—without sustaining a serious or life-threatening injury.

Fall height is tested by dropping a device to the playground surface from the play structure floor level—the top of a slide or a swing in full oscillation—and measuring the impact of the device on the playground at the ground level (playground surfacing). The device’s built-in detection system identifies the acceleration used to calculate the fall height.

What is the Recommended Fall Height?

Perfect Surfaces genuine PlaySafe SHOCK tiles are fall-height certified (up to 10’) and ideal for commercial or residential playgrounds. A 4’ fall height is standard for most commercial playgrounds, but depending on the play structures present, it may be as low as 1′ to 2′ feet for residential playgrounds. We suggest you find out about the fall height requirement in your area before purchasing.

How Do You Clean Playground Flooring?

Most Perfect Surfaces playground products are very easy to clean and maintain. A simple sweep, vacuum, mop, or hose down will do. We strongly discourage using cleaners with a high pH value or petroleum-based products to clean the rubber. We suggest using a cleaner or degreaser with a neutral pH, like our CleanBreak Cleaner & Degreaser, applied with a sponge or mop and water for cleaning.
